The reader only captures a fingerprint image, which is processed by a software specially designed to extract some characteristic points, called minutiae. One regular fingerprint has about 50 minutiae. About 13 of them are needed to assure the identification.
When all the minutiae are extracted, they are put together. This is called a Template, the joining of all the extracted minutiae in a fingerprint. The identification is made by a triangulation process and geometrical relation between the minutiae only, not the entire image.
In the Fingerprint SDK, the templates usually have around 700 bytes.

O leitor captura somente imagens de impressões digitais, que são processadas por um software especialmente desenhado para extrair alguns pontos característicos, chamados de minúcias. Uma impressão digital normal possui em torno de 50 minúcias. Em torno de 13 delas são necessárias para assegurar a identificação.
Quando todas as minúcias são extraídas, elas são postas juntas. Isto é chamado de um template, a junção de todas as minúcias extraídas de uma impressão digital. A identificação é feita somente através de um processo de triangulação e relação geométrica entre as minúcias, não usando a imagem inteira.
