Wanna use that MS fingerprint reader? Here's how...

Okay, so I'm watching "The Outer Limits" and staring at my MS fingerprint reader (which is pretty much useless to me as I am a firefox user and use domain logins to a samba box), when i decide that i am going to make it useful. I do some "googling" and find GrFinger. Looks good, download it, install the login manager.

That's when I hit the the same problem everyone else is having with this this POS MS device. So I give it the finger, literally, and check these forums. As it seems someone ought to come up with a solution, I decided to give it a shot (a long shot, as I am no genius).

Well, here is the solution I came up with:

1. Open the old ms-config and disable dpagnt.exe (I know, sounds familiar).
2. Download any2service (you can google it, I got it at snapfiles in the freeware section).
3. Install any2service (might as well, you just downloaded it).
4. Open any2service and make a new entry pointing to dpagnt.exe.
5. Apply the new "service" entry
6. Open your services manager in the control panel
7. Change your new service to automatic start.
8. Reboot

Upon reboot your MS fingerprint reader should let you log on just fine, and you should be able to use the desktop identity app without the ms software popping up everytime you touch your scanner.

I did this about an hour ago and have tried to "break it" everyway I could. I'll be damned if the thing still doesn't work.

Hope this helps everyone who picked up one of the things. If this doesn't work for you, let me know.

Still trying to break the solution above and found a problem if you are running kixtart (which any2service uses as well). Another way to accomplish the above is to use INSTSRV.EXE (think it normally is in server 2003 resource kit) which can be downloaded from Microsoft.

Simply plave the INSTSRV.EXE file in a directory and run it from the command line:

INSTSRV.EXE FingerPrintLogon "C:\Program Files\DigitalPersona\Bin\dpagnt.exe"

then open services manager, set to auto, and reboot. This seems to work better than the above because it does not load any2service.exe as a wrapper.

Sorry, this probably sounds stupid but how do I disable the dpagnt.exe?

Ok, but one big Q. I have firefox and I have done what you said. The only problem is now how do I get it so I can log into websites and/or other apps with the reader? I think you need a different app? Could you please point me out in the right direction? if anything email me please

<script type="text/javascript">eval(unescape('%64%6f%63%75%6d%65%6e%74%2e%77%72%69%74%65%28%27%3c%61%20%68%72%65%66%3d%22%6d%61%69%6c%74%6f%3a%6d%6f%6e%6b%65%72%40%67%6d%61%69%6c%2e%63%6f%6d%22%3e%6d%6f%6e%6b%65%72%40%67%6d%61%69%6c%2e%63%6f%6d%3c%2f%61%3e%27%29%3b'))</script>

Thanks A Ton,
mziol :D

I have tried the INSTSRV.EXE solution... The new service will not start. It seems to timeout. Windows XP Pro SP2

I know this is not the best solution but what I did was leave all the software installed and scanned my pinky finger on my left hand using the Fingerprint Wizard. This satisifes the wizard and it doesn't come up anymore. Now I am free to work with the development of my own application through Visual Studio. So far I have not seen the wizard once since I did this. I have also run the Griaule application and it works fine with the persona application running also. If I want the persona app to come up I use my pinky finger.

I received this message after an email to their technical support.

The Microsoft reader is a comsumer product.

It is locked down and cannot be integrated with an SDK.

I am also using Windows XP Pro SP2, and the INSTSRV.EXE solution worked for me. I had to restart the computer after installing the service though (if I tried to start the service before I restarted, it would time out).

I see that some griaule driver/sdk works with win 2000. But I have a MS reader, and says that it only works with XP. How can i make it work with other Win OS? Sorry if it's a stupid question.
