Overview

Fingerprints are unique and, because of this, became a fast, secure and reliable way to identify people. The skin on internal surfaces of hands and feet has ridges that form the patterns we know as fingerprints. These ridges on skin can fork, break and bend over, creating unique patterns. These patterns have been useful for a hundred years in law enforcement and civil enrollment.

Nowadays the experts in fingerprint identification have a great ally: The Automatic Fingerprint Identification System (AFIS). Using an AFIS system, these patterns are identified by software and are used for comparison with another fingerprint pattern to determine if they came from the same finger and ultimately, from the same person.

AFIS systems can automatically detect several features like: ridge pattern, core, deltas, ridge count and minutiae. Minutiae are the points where a ridge ends or bifurcate. Based on minutiae it is possible to search on large databases and retrieve the identity of the fingerprint owner.
